A year ago this week I set up Sian’s and here is the first blog I wrote at the time – Sian’s. I didn’t really know how it would take off, I just knew I had to give it a try and do some kind of work. So I put together a list of what I knew I could do, and do well, and started to spread the word via Social Media. Everyone that knows me will know I’m not one for group networking so Social Media has been brilliant for me.
Although my initial plan was to push the Dog Holidays and then be at home working it didn’t transpire that way. Whilst I love dogs stupidly it is very time consuming having a visitor dog come to stay. They aren’t in a kennel being checked on now and then for a couple of walks. Any dogs that stay with me are with me all the time and get lots of attention. It’s easier now I have the fence and gate around the garden as they can run freely outside but it can be very tiring. Thankfully all the dogs I’ve had to stay get on well with my 3 dogs, although the cats are another matter. Bruce left home for 48 hours and came back with reinforcements in the shape of a beautiful black feral cat. 🙂 So now I only have a visitor dog every now and then and mostly just for friends whose dogs I know already and get on with mine. I’m still open for new dogs but not as a main business anymore.
Being an experienced and qualified Accountant I have picked up a lot of work doing company accounts for a few different companies; a couple in the UK, a few in Cork and some more local to me. These involve me maybe spending one day a month in their office or working from home and thankfully a couple are one day a week. Part of this is also Credit Control for a local company in Dungarvan which I really enjoy. I seem to have a knack for what is sometimes a hated job within an organisation but something which is vital to the cash flow. I am very grateful to Tom Holmes of Ballymount Accounting who has become a good friend and has provided me with a lot of the work mentioned.
I love writing and thankfully I am still writing for Bloggertone on a monthly basis plus this blog too. I mainly write about Accounts or Social Media however I have written some personal posts here too which received great feedback. I’ve written Press Releases and book reviews for a few people and Web Content for Webcontent.ie which I absolutely loved doing. I had to proof-read a manuscript which suited me well and I enjoyed the work. Most of all I’m hoping I get to do a lot more writing as it’s something I truly love.
I’m still doing sales for 020 London and I’ve been with them for 7 years now. I find them easy enough sales and really don’t take much of my time up in the week at all. Any day now I will be helping to promote and sell for visitorM. Watch this space for an amazing new iPhone app; especially hotels, restaurants and tourism agencies for a start.
As I mentioned above Social Media has done very well for me and I’ve passed some of my Facebook and Twitter knowledge on to a few clients. I know it’s all baffling to some so it’s great to be able to get people past the basics and well on their way to finding their own best fit on Twitter and Facebook. We all had to start somewhere.
So there you go, one year on and Sian’s is going well. Of course I’m always looking for more work as I’m never one to sit and twiddle my thumbs. So give me a shout if you think I may be able to help you at all.
Finally I’d like to thank some people who have been hugely supportive and helpful in my endeavours –Lynne Allbutt, Miriam Ahern, Fiona Ashe, Claire Boyles, Gerry Browne, Ali Clarke, Catherine Connors, Niall Devitt & the Bloggertone crew, Derbhile Dromey, Máire Flynn, Paraic Hegarty, Tom Holmes, Frederique Murphy, Melanie & Alex Schregardus, Grainne Sherlock, the Moloneys, JJ & Siobhan Fitzgerald and their family and most importantly my family for seeing me through some very hard times over the last few years. I apologise to anyone I’ve missed out but the list could have been endless as I’ve received such great support from so many people. A heartfelt thank you to you all.
I’m looking forward to writing the 2nd Anniversary blog about all the great things I’m going to achieve in the coming year. 🙂
